The destruction of the city had been absolute. She remembered the heat as the buildings burned down around her, the light of the flames against the horizon, and the menacing, cracking noises the buildings gave just before they collapsed.
Ever so slowly, her eyes began to crack open, and the darkness began to receded from her vision. Blinking at the red hued light that seared her eyes, she reached out a hand to push herself weakly upright.
